The family of Stefano Steenbakkers Betancourt never thought that the death of the young man was to bring life to five people, after his tragic death on the night of June 24, 2012.
For his mother, Zorimar Betancourt, the pain and emptiness caused by his departure had to be replaced with an act that would allow her to honor the life of her child. Thus, Fundación Stefano Steenbakkers was born. The mission of the organization seeks to turn Puerto Rico in the first organ donor country in the world, or at least get 25% of the population to register as a donor.
Three years after the tragic death of her son Stefano Steenbakkers Betancourt amid a carjacking and after surviving breast cancer, Zorimar Betancourt, is immersed in new projects aimed at raising awareness about the importance of organ donation.
“I want people to get the message, create awareness that organ donation helps give life. Let people understand that when you are here in the world you can give the best to help other people and their families.”-Zorimar, also founder and director, with her daughter Anna, of The Stefano Steenbakkers Betancourt Foundation.
